Betsy McCaughey, Ellis Henican Square Off on Trump and Shootings

The Tennessee man who authorities said killed four Marines and wounded three others Thursday in a shooting rampage at two military recruiting centers in Chattanooga should not have been allowed back into the United States after recently visiting Yemen, former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"This person allegedly had traveled overseas to areas that are known to be terrorist training areas," she told "Newsmax Prime" host Ric Blackwell. "He probably should have never been allowed back in the country. His passport should have been seized."

"Congress has had one hearing after another on this, but that's all Congress does is hold hearings," she said.

Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Yemen, was killed by police after he rammed a gate at the second shooting site, a Naval Reserve Center. He shot four Marines to death there. Three others were wounded in the rampage.

Officials said that they believed Abdulazeez visited Jordan last year and possibly Yemen. He is believed to have traveled to the Middle East, where his family has roots, between April and November 2014.

McCaughey and radio and TV host Ellis Henican squared off throughout their interview with Blackwell on several issues related to the Tennessee shootings, including Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's call for arming personnel at the recruitment centers.

"It's typical Trump, right?" Henican began. "Throw out some sort of incendiary, simple-minded reaction. He doesn't know, I mean this is a kind of a decision that we want smart people to make, right?"

"It's not something that dumb guys ought to answer with slogans and that's exactly what's wrong with the Trump campaign," he said.

But McCaughey retorted: The fact is that these military personnel should be armed.

"We had plenty of warning that military installations would be targeted. If we can't arm our military personnel, who should be armed?"

"These people have been screened before they were enrolled in the military; they're trained to use firearms," she added. "They should be exactly the people carrying firearms."
