Betsy McCaughey: Trump Brings Honesty to Campaign

By    |   Monday, 20 Jul 2015 09:25 PM

Donald Trump's presence in the Republican presidential campaign is bringing honesty to the race, a former lieutenant governor tells Newsmax.

During an appearance on Newsmax TV's "The Hard Line," Dr. Betsy McCaughey was asked about Trump's recent comment that Arizona Sen. John McCain, a Republican, is not a war hero. McCain spent more than five years in a Vietnamese POW camp during the Vietnam War.

"Let's see how he does in the future but however it works out for Donald Trump, the fact is he has been a very positive contribution to this presidential race because he's forcing the other candidates to be honest talkers," McCaughey tells host Ed Berliner.

Trump has ignited the presidential campaign with his straight-talking style. He drew criticism after making remarks about Mexicans during his campaign announcement speech in April, but his poll numbers are strong.

The latest Monmouth University poll released Monday showed Trump, with 13 percent, is second in Iowa behind Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (22 percent).

"Americans like straight talkers contrary to what the sanctimonious Mrs. Clinton has to say, and the fact is even though Donald Trump was a bit off the reservation in criticizing John McCain's war record, McCain was a terrible presidential candidate. Totally ineffective against Barack Obama," McCaughey says.

"Trump, on the other hand, is willing to go mano-a-mano against any of these candidates. Now I said mano-a-mano because I'm predicting that maybe he can simply buy out Mrs. Clinton rather than run against her. She's generally for sale."

McCaughey also compares Trump's situation to that of Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who lied about his Vietnam war record.

"He's sitting in the United States Senate," she says of Blumenthal. "People forgive these mistakes and the voters will forgive Trump's mistake."
