Kerik on NY Prison Escape: 'I Don't Get the Whole Honor Dorm Thing'

By    |   Monday, 29 Jun 2015 05:34 PM

The whole New York state correctional system will likely be reviewed following the escape of two prisoners from the Clinton County Correctional Facility in Dannemora, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik tells Newsmax TV.

The inmates, Richard Matt and David Sweat, were in an "honor" area of the prison where they were allowed certain privileges such as wearing civilian clothes. They talked a prison worker Joyce Mitchell into smuggling them hacksaw blades inside ground beef that Officer Gene Palmer gave to them and allowed them to cook in their cells.

Both workers face charges of aiding the escapees. Matt, 49, was shot to death on Friday after three weeks on the run. Sweat was shot but taken alive on Sunday.

"I ran Rikers Island for six years, and I had every classification from minimum security to max and super max," Kerik told "The Hard Line" on Monday. "I don't get the whole honor dorm thing. … Nobody searched those cells for probably weeks to months, that allowed them to dig from one cell to another, then into the pipe chase, and do these practice runs back and forth out to the manhole cover."

An inspector general is looking into how the lax system at the maximum-security prison allowed for the men to escape, and will likely extend his investigation throughout the state system, Kerik said.

He noted, however, that on a national scale, prisons are safe, and that even with inside help, the prisoners' plan should have been discovered before they were able to successfully carry it out.

"I give a lot of credit to the men and women that man those guys of those jails and prisons, because it's an enormously dangerous job, it's a difficult task, and 99 percent of the people that's watching this show right now, they'd never want to do that job," Kerik said.
