Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik cautioned Americans on Newsmax TV on Wednesday to be "extremely vigilant" regarding terrorism this holiday season because "this enemy is here to stay."

"Nobody should be surprised by what happened in San Bernardino," Kerik, who headed the city's forces on 9/11, told "Newsmax Prime" host Ric Blackwell. "If it happened right now this afternoon, this evening, tomorrow — you know what, nobody should be surprised."

The Dec. 2 rampage by a married couple with ties to radical jihadism at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino killed 14 people and injured 22 others.

Kerik is the author of the best-selling book, "From Jailer to Jailed: My Journey from Correction and Police Commissioner to Inmate #84888-054."

"Regardless of the holidays, put the holidays aside," Kerik cautioned. "The fact of the matter is that there's an enemy that wants to destroy this country, destroy our society."

"Whether they can get away with it during the holidays or some other time, they're going to try to do it," he added. "We have to be extremely vigilant and make sure that doesn't happen."
