Ben Stein: I 'Love' Lindsey Graham But Drop Climate Change

By    |   Wednesday, 03 Jun 2015 07:27 PM

Ben Stein says he's a big fan of Sen. Lindsey Graham – who declared his candidacy for president this week – but the actor, author and speechwriter for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford says he hopes the South Carolina Republican will lay off the subject of climate change.

"I love him. He's fabulous. He's the National Security candidate," Stein said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

But Stein is less enthused by Graham's claim that climate change is real, something many Republicans vehemently disagree with.

"I was a little bit dismayed … because we're getting way too hepped up about the environment. It's still by no means clear that man-made emissions are the real problem. It's still by no means clear how great the problem is," Stein said.

"The measurements seem to vary all over the place and before we start turning the world upside down, we should have some more precise measures and we should have a more precise way of determining what causes what."

Graham's view that climate change is real and Republicans must seriously look at it "surprised" Stein.

"I guess the thing is it has become so politically correct to assume that global warming is a menace and that man-made emissions are the problem, despite the fact that there's so much data that we have higher emissions from natural causes than from man-made causes," Stein told Steve Malzberg.

"The data is extremely confusing and there are many, many scientists who think that the man-made warming is a myth.

"Even if there is warming, it's such a lower magnitude that doesn't really merit restrictions on individual liberty. I'm scared. This whole idea is cooked up to allow the socialists to control the country."

Graham announced on Monday that he's joining the crowded field of Republicans vying for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. The group includes: Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee, Dr. Ben Carson and George Pataki.

Stein, a Newsmax contributor who writes the "Dreemz'' column for Newsmax Magazine, has appeared in such hit movies as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" and "Dennis the Menace."
