With the Islamic State's yearlong "genocide" of Iraq's indigenous Christians and Yezidis unrelenting, the archbishop in the nation's Kurdish-controlled north is calling for the United States to act to protect religious freedom before "this history is gone."

In an interview Friday with "Newsmax Prime" hosts J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on Newsmax TV, the Archbishop of Erbil, Bashar Warda, says the choice for victims of religious persecution is not just fight or flee.

"A third course of action would be stopping ISIS from advancing… then helping the community to sustain themselves," he said. "But most importantly, to work for naming what's happening in Iraq over the last 12 months as a genocide."

"Once you name it widely and justly… work for it," he urged. "As congressmen, as the whole [United States], go for that resolution: 'It's a genocide happening there and we have to act.' Then you are doing justice to the people, to the victims."

Warda warned a history of 2,000 years of Christians and Yezidis in Iraq "will be gone" without immediate and decisive action.

"[I]n 2003, we had some 1.2 million Christians," he said. "Today, we are speaking about less than 300,000 Christians."

Along with the Yezidis religious community, "two indigenous people of Iraq are… under threat now," he said.

"If you don't stand for the Christian faith, at least stand for the victims of Yezidis and Christians together."
