Sen. John Barrasso: Obama Keeps Underestimating Global Terror Threat

By    |   Thursday, 04 Dec 2014 04:20 PM

With yet another American captive of radical Islamists facing death in a video-recorded message, President Barack Obama must re-focus and recognize the extent of the renewed global threat posed by terrorist groups including the Islamic State and al-Qaida, says U.S. Sen. John Barrasso.

"The president needs to focus, specifically, on the huge level of this threat, not just with ISIS but the possibility of ISIS working with al-Qaida," the Wyoming Republican and Senate Foreign Relations Committee member told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner on Newsmax TV Thursday.

Barrasso said that Congress will do its part, and he predicted that on Monday his committee will begin hearings on a new Authorization for Use of Military Force against terrorists — a declaration that has been controversially absent from Obama's military campaign against the Islamic State.

"If there's anything that's focused the American mind, it's in seeing those videos of the beheadings that have occurred to hostages by ISIS, and now … with al-Qaida," said Barrasso, referring to the taped message from Luke Somers, an American reportedly kidnapped by al-Qaida operatives in Yemen.

Somers was the object of an attempted rescue by U.S. and Yemeni forces, but was not among a group of hostages freed in that secret operation in November, according to reports.

Barrasso said that he visited with U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf during Thanksgiving and found that "concern has risen significantly" among the armed forces about the terror threat facing Americans generally, not just those serving abroad in uniform.

"And that's why it's so important for us to be engaged," he said.

"Remember, the president earlier this year said that these guys were like a JV team," said Barrasso. "He was absolutely wrong on this. We now are at a point where we're moving to go to a fourth secretary of defense because the president continues to want to micromanage things from the White House and underestimate the threat.

"The president was wrong when he got all troops out of Iraq: He should have listened to the advice of the military leaders who recommended a residual force of about 15,000 there," said Barrasso. "If the president [likewise] pulls everyone out of Afghanistan, we're going to just see a repeat of the movie that we saw in Iraq in Afghanistan."

On another issue before Congress, the president's executive order to shield millions of immigrants here illegally from deportation, Barrasso said that Obama has "made [matters] worse in terms of immigration reform."

"We need to do immigration modernization in this country: border security, enforcement, things like merit-based and skills-based visas," said Barrasso. "There's a lot of things we need to do and the president's made it a lot harder to accomplish those things."

He said that Obama, "in the face of an overwhelming defeat" in the midterm election, has adopted the attitude that, "I don't care what the voters say: I'm going to do what I want to."

Barrasso also discussed the fallout from a grand jury in New York on Wednesday declining to indict a police officer in the chokehold-related death of Eric Garner.

He said that police and the people they serve both have legitimate concerns to raise with one another, and they need to keep talking constructively in their communities in multiple forums.

"We need to get to a point where ultimately there is a return to trust in this country," said Barrasso.
