Jed Babbin: Get Arab Nations Involved in Terror Fight

Wednesday, 11 Feb 2015 06:59 PM

President Barack Obama's request for congressional authorization to fight the Islamic State (ISIS) is a long-needed start in battling terror, but it's woefully not enough, says Jed Babbin, former deputy undersecretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush.

Babbin, now a contributing editor at The American Spectator, says Arab nations throughout the Middle East need to be get involved in destroying Islamic extremists.

"[Obama is] still is not willing to do much and there's a possibility of putting boots on the ground, [but] only in so far as rescuing pilots or taking some Special Forces in to try to do away with these ISIS leaders," Babbin said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"That's maybe a start, but there's a lot of things we could do, maybe there's some things we should do. I keep coming back to the point that it's the Arab nations' fight.

"Saudi Arabia should be joining with Egypt, should be joining with the Jordanians and they are the only ones fighting right now and they should be defeating ISIS. There is really not much of a role there at all for us."

Babbin said the roots of terrorism all come back to Iran and the other nations that sponsor it, including Saudi Arabia.

"So, are we going to step up to this? We haven't since 2001 and this president is certainly not going to do that. He does not see that there's much of a problem there," he said.

"Don't forget, we've heard for years now, years and years and years that Iran was very close to achieving nuclear weapons and they are even closer now.

"Now we're going to end up with a treaty with Iran that's not going to have any meaningful verification.... One day they're just going to say, oh by the way guys, I've got nuclear weapons and you're all kind of going to be our slaves from now on."
