Andrew Card: Priebus Won't Be 'Bamboozled' By Washington

By    |   Thursday, 01 Dec 2016 05:05 PM

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is an excellent choice for Donald Trump's chief of staff and will be prepared to guide the nation's 45th president in making "brutally tough" decisions, Andrew Card, who was George W. Bush's chief of staff, told Newsmax TV.

"Reince Priebus kind of bridges kind of the non-Washington world and the Washington world, and I hate to say it, but they're two different worlds," Card, president of Franklin Pierce University, told Thursday's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"It's important to have a chief of staff that understands what it's like to be in the bubble of Washington and not be bamboozled by the bubble, and Reince has a good grounding outside of Washington. But he also has an appreciation for how Washington does work.

"And remember that the vast majority of people who work in Washington live within 50 miles of Washington, D.C., and those communities are very different from the rest of America. Reince understands that, so I think that he'll be a good bridge to serve President Trump."

But the job is not an easy one, Card told Malzberg.

"Ultimately, the chief of staff's job is a tough job because he has to serve the president. He doesn't really serve the country. He serves the president in helping to make sure he serves the country well," Card said.

"One of the toughest jobs Reince Priebus will have is making sure that Donald Trump never has the luxury of making an easy decision. Chiefs of staff must make sure the president doesn't waste his time, and time is something that is very important to pay attention to when you're the president.

"The decisions are brutally tough, and it'll be Reince Priebus's job to make sure the president is not wasting his time by making an easy decision."
