Daily Beast's Kotkin: Class Is Today's 'Defining Issue'

By    |   Wednesday, 15 Oct 2014 01:08 PM

A majority of today's moms and dads believe their children will have less success than they did, according to Joel Kotkin, a presidential fellow at Chapman University and columnist for The Daily Beast.

Kotkin — author of the new book, "The New Class Conflict," published by Telos Press Publishing — said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV:

"One the most frightening things when I started working on the book is the percentage of Americans, now up to almost two thirds, who feel that their children will not do as well as they did.

"The fact is that the middle class has gone as a proportion of the population from about 60 percent to 50 percent — in places like New York and California, well below that."

Kotkin referenced the writings of Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, as well as those of more recent Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Bill Clinton.

They believed America worked because there were "lots of people who owned property and who felt their lives would get better and the lives of their children would be better," Kotkin said.

"That is not the case today and that's a very frightening situation, so my point in the book was not to argue for the right or for the left, but to say let's stipulate that class mobility is the big issue facing America in the 21st century.

"And then let's have a debate between conservatives and progressives about how best to deal with it."

And how is that accomplished?

"We need to have a tax reform that helps small business and entrepreneurs as opposed to the very wealthy," Kotkin said.

"You need to have infrastructure investment, and you need to decentralize power so that the middle class has some influence over local government.

"The bigger the government gets, the wider territory it has, the more you're going to have power controlled by a small group of people. So the critical issue is to understand class is the defining American issue of the 21st century."
