Allen West: Media Unfairly Portray Conservatives on Sex Scandals

By    |   Thursday, 04 Jun 2015 07:54 PM

The parade of Republicans who've emerged to clarify their opinions of conservative reality-show star and alleged sex abuser Josh Duggar reveals how the media unfairly focuses on the GOP — not the Democrats — when it comes to scandals, former Rep. Allen West says.

"The duplicitous hypocrisy is beyond laughable," West, a Florida Republican, said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"You think about how certain members of the GOP nominee cast are having to make statements about the fact that they were just impetuous with the Duggar family after that revelation. That never sticks with the folks on the other side and it's amazing."

Duggar, one of the stars of the TLC's hit reality show "19 Kids and Counting," apologized for unspecified bad behavior two weeks ago and resigned as a lobbyist for the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group.

Duggar's parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar revealed this week in an interview with Fox News that as a teenager, Josh, now 27, fondled his four sisters and a babysitter – all five underage at the time.

As the media has pointed out, Duggar has been photographed with many GOP stars, including: former Govs. Sarah Palin of Alaska and Jeb Bush of Florida, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Govs. Rick Perry of Texas and Scott Walker of Wisconsin, and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

Santorum — who is running for president and was endorsed by the Duggar family when he first sought the GOP nomination for a White House run in 2012 — said on ABC's "Good Morning America" that he was "sickened" by the revelations.

Palin, along with her daughter Bristol, came to the defense of the Duggars, stating: "I'm not an apologist for any sexual predator, but I'm sickened that the media gives their chosen ones a pass for any behavior as long as they share their leftwing politics."

She was referring to "Girls" creator and star Lena Dunham, who, as the Washington Post reported last November, chronicled in a memoir instances of her behavior as a child, which included examining her sister's private parts.

Huckabee, who is also running for president, stuck by the Duggars, posting on Facebook: "Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things."

West said that Democrats, who've said little about the Duggar scandal, are never held to the same standards by the media. But that Americans can see through the double standard.

"I believe when you look at the numbers that talk about the trustworthiness of Hillary Clinton, those 'chickens will come home to roost,' if I could borrow the words of the reverend from Chicago, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. It'll eventually happen," West told Steve Malzberg.
