Dershowitz: Slain Hamas Murder Suspects 'Deserved' It

By    |   Wednesday, 24 Sep 2014 04:17 PM

Two Hamas members suspected of kidnapping and killing three Israeli teenagers last June "got what they deserved" when they were slain by Israeli forces on Tuesday, Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz tells Newsmax TV.

The men were killed in a hail of gunfire in a building in the West Bank where they had been hiding for a week, The Washington Post reported. Israeli military officials said the two had refused to surrender.

"There was a shootout and they were killed. Certainly they got what they deserved," Dershowitz said Wednesday on "America's Forum."

"Every country, every police force in the world would do the same thing. They were given every opportunity to surrender."

Dershowitz said it would have been "much better to take them alive," but explained it was a "law enforcement measure," and he did not anticipate the move would lead to an escalation in violence between Hamas and Israel.

Dershowitz explained that Hamas "always wins in the court of public opinion, because you get radical leftists who criticize and condemn everything Israel does," adding that anti-Semitism worldwide continues to put the Israelis in a negative light.

"Israel stands in a very low point internationally," he said. "International opinion is very much against Israel. And, we're seeing today's New York Times has a long story about the increase in anti-Semitism in Europe."

In an effort to turn public opinion around, Dershowitz said he recently wrote a book, "Terror Tunnels: The Case for Israel's Just War Against Hamas," to explain that "when Israel attacks terrorists who fire rockets and who build tunnels to kill their children — I was in one of those tunnels — they're acting in self-defense."

Hamas used a "dead baby strategy" to provoke attacks by Israel and influence public opinion, Dershowitz explained.

"They purposefully want to induce Israel to fire back and kill civilians so they can hold them up," Dershowitz said, adding that now "ISIS [the Islamic State] is doing the same thing."

"[ISIS is] now embedding their fighters among civilians. Already, the United States and its allies have killed some civilians. There will be more civilian deaths," he said. "That's designed to get the good guys, the democracies, to kill as many civilians as possible, so they look bad in the court of public opinion."
