WikiLeaks announced Friday it is considering putting together an online database of certain Twitter users' account information, an idea that is being blasted on the social media network.

One of the organization's Twitter handles posted these messages midday Friday:

Verified Twitter accounts are marked with a blue check and signify the account has been verified by Twitter as being real and authentic. Celebrities, politicians, high-profile athletes, and other public figures typically have verified accounts.

WikiLeaks responded to tweets criticizing the idea, saying the database is not intended to actually publish people's private information:

WikiLeaks made headlines last year because it leaked stolen emails from Democrats — including Hillary Clinton's campaign manager John Podesta — during the presidential campaign. Its founder Julian Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since 2012 after there were calls for his assassination because WikiLeaks published classified information it had obtained to its website.

Assange is also the subject of a rape investigation in Sweden.
