White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday slammed a report in The New York Times saying that the Justice Department was taking aim at college programs that discriminate against whites, labeling the reporter's questions on the issue "accusatory."

"Does the president believe that white applicants to college are the victims of discrimination?" asked Justin Sink of Bloomberg News.

"I'm sorry?" Sanders queried.

"Does the president believe that white applicants to college are the victims of discrimination?"

"I'm not aware of that opinion at all," Sanders responded. "I certainly haven't had that conversation or have any reason to."

"Can you explain why the Justice Department's civil right division is devoting its limited time and resources … ?" Sink said.

"Quite an accusatory question, but I'd be happy to respond," Sanders said.

The Times disclosed Tuesday that the Justice Department was taking steps to investigate and sue universities over programs that discriminate against whites.

The report cited an internal announcement to the agency's civil rights division, which asked attorneys who were interested in working on the project to submit their resumes by Aug. 9.

"The New York Times article is based on uncorroborated sources," Sanders said in attacking the report.

"While the White House does not confirm or deny the existence of potential investigations, the Department of Justice will always review credible allegations of discrimination on the basis of any race.

"I don't have anything further on that," she said.
