Al-Qaida to Its Readers: Target Western Oil Tankers

By    |   Monday, 20 Oct 2014 08:13 PM

How and where to strike at tankers delivering oil to Western countries is the subject of an article in a new English-language magazine published by an al-Qaida propaganda wing, the online news site Vocativ reports.

The article, "On Targeting the Achilles Heel of Western Economies," appears in the inaugural issue of Resurgence, a 117-page periodical posted online by As-Sahab, which Vocativ describes as a "new South Asia al-Qaida media branch."

The article recommends attacks on oil-transit choke points, including the Straits of Hormuz and the Suez Canal.

"Even if a single supertanker . . . were to be attacked in one of the choke points or hijacked and scuttled in one of these narrow sea lanes, the consequences would be phenomenal," says the article, published under the byline Hamza Khalid.

Khalid calls for a "coordinated effort to disrupt enemy shipping" along tanker routes as well as attacks against pipelines, people — Western workers at Middle East-based oil companies — and even the U.S. Navy.

Vocativ's Sarah Kaufman writes that although the United States is making strides toward energy independence, disruption of its Mideast oil supply would be "devastating" because the U.S. remains the world's biggest oil consumer, even as it is poised to overtake Saudi Arabia as the top oil producer.

Resurgence is also a reminder that while al-Qaida terrorists "have recently taken a back seat in Western media to their more evil counterparts, ISIS . . . they are still plotting the destruction of America," Vocativ reports.
