Former Rep. Allen West has added his name to the list of those supporting the creation of a select committee to investigate the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

The Army veteran announced his support in a letter to Virginia Rep. Frank Wolf, who is sponsoring a resolution urging House Speaker John Boehner to form the special panel.

More than half the Republicans in the House — 135— are co-sponsoring the resolution, The Hill reports. But the House leadership and chairmen of the committees with jurisdiction are opposed.

As for West, "As a former member of Congress who also served in uniform, I know how important it is that we learn the truth about why military support was never sent to the Americans under fire at the U.S. annex in Benghazi last September," he wrote in his letter.

"I urge the remaining Republicans who have not yet cosponsored to sign on to H. Res 36 when the House returns next week. After eight months, it's time for a select committee to ensure the families of the victims and the American people get the answers they deserve."

The attack last year killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. The parents of two of the victims have offered their support for the committee, as have 700 special operations veterans, The Hill reports.

West represented a district in Florida for a single term, but was defeated in his bid for re-election to the House in November.
