Wayne LaPierre, the leader of the National Rifle Association (NRA), encouraged members to stand behind the president and that Americans won't be fooled by "the elites," the Washington Examiner reported Friday.

"More and more all over this country, good decent honest Americans are seeing right through all the lies of the elites," LaPierre said at the NRA's annual convention in Atlanta on Friday.

LaPierre maintained that the NRA "polls better than Congress, both political parties and Major League Baseball" and that the movement against elites was "sweeping the country," the article explained. LaPierre gave his remarks prior to President Donald Trump's address to the audience.

LaPierre also told members during the speech they should support the president as "leftist zealots," anti-gun activists and media and political elites target his administration, The Washington Times reported Friday.

"We must do all we can to support our president, because, as you know, there's an intense war that's being waged by leftist zealots to destroy President Trump and destroy his administration," LaPierre said, according to the Washington Times.

"It's up to us to speak up against the three most dangerous voices in America — academic elites, political elites, and media elites," he said, calling them "America's greatest domestic threats."

Trump, the first president since former President Ronald Reagan to address an NRA convention, told members on Friday he was their "true friend and champion" and that "the eight-year assault on your Second Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end."
