Walker: 'I Don't Know' If Being Gay Is a Choice

Sunday, 19 Jul 2015 03:41 PM

Gay marriage opponent and Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker said in a CNN interview broadcast on Sunday he was not sure whether people were gay as a matter of choice.

The governor of Wisconsin, Walker is a favorite with conservatives who say it is a choice and take issue with gay rights activists and their supporters who say sexual orientation is determined at birth.

Best known for his victory over unions in his state, Walker became the 15th Republican candidate to enter the race for the November 2016 presidential election. He is among the Republican leaders in opinion polls.

In the interview he was asked, "Do you think being gay is a choice?"

"Oh, I mean I think - that's not even an issue for me to be involved in," he replied. "The bottom line is, I'm going to stand up and work hard for every American regardless of who they are, no matter where they come from, no matter what their background."

Pressed to give an opinion, Walker said: "I don't have an opinion on every single issue out there ... I don't know. I don't know the answer to that question."

Walker called the Supreme Court landmark ruling last month backing gay marriage a "grave mistake," and backs a constitutional amendment to allow states to decide whether to allow gay marriage.

Last week, Walker expressed support for a ban on gay Boy Scout leaders in order to protect children. He clarified his remarks later as referring not to physical protection, but protection from the debate, according to media reports.
