More than half a million veterans are waiting to see a doctor for appointments that have been scheduled for at least 30 days, according to new data.

Numbers recently released by the Department of Veterans Affairs show 505,880 veterans have been waiting a month or longer for care as of May 15, the highest number since Jan. 15 (526,212).

The 30-days-or-more figure dropped to 501,143 for Feb. 1 and then rose to 503,502 15 days later before plummeting to 480,754 on March 1. It's been mostly on the rise ever since.

The troubled VA has dealt with slow wait times for years, and a scandal involving falsified wait times used for official reporting purposes was uncovered two years ago after several dozen veterans died while waiting to see a doctor.

The number of veterans waiting for care between 31 and 60 days is at 297,013, according to the data, 131,214 for between 61 and 90 days, 46,672 for between 91 and 120 days, and 30,981 for longer than 120 days.

The VA has implemented new policies and procedures regarding wait times as it recovers from the scandal that resulted in a change in leadership.

"This news is unwelcome, but not unexpected," Florida Republican Jeff Miller, who chairs the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, told the Washington Free Beacon.

"Quite frankly, it is illogical to think the department's performance and veterans' experiences with the agency will ever significantly improve as long as VA routinely tolerates egregious behavior among employees such as armed robbery participation and wait-time manipulation."
