Trump's Latest on Abortion: 'Laws Are Set... Have to Leave It That Way'

Donald Trump said Friday that America's abortion laws should remain as they are — though he does not disagree with the proposition that abortion is murder.

"The laws are set now on abortion and that's the way they're going to remain until they're changed," Trump told host John Dickerson on CBS News' "Face the Nation."

A portion of the interview was released Friday. The program airs on Sunday.

On Tuesday, Trump said that "some form of punishment" should happen to women who get abortions if the procedure is outlawed — but then quickly reversed that position.

"I would've preferred states' rights," the Republican presidential front-runner added. "I think it would've been better if it were up to the states.

"But right now, the laws are set. … At this moment, the laws are set — and I think we have to leave it that way."

Then Dickerson asked, "Do you think abortion is murder?"

"I have my opinions on it, but I'd rather not comment on it," Trump responded.
"You said you were very pro-life," Dickerson added. "Pro-life means that ... abortion is murder."

"I mean, I do have my opinions on it," Trump responded. "I just don't think it's an appropriate forum."

"But you don't disagree with that proposition, that it's murder?" Dickerson asked.

"No, I don't disagree with it," Trump replied.

In seeking to quell any suggestion that Trump has switched his stance on abortion yet again this week, campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks said in a statement that "Mr. Trump gave an accurate account of the law as it is today and made clear it must stay that way now — until he is president.

"Then, he will change the law through his judicial appointments and allow the states to protect the unborn," Hicks said. "There is nothing new or different here. "
