Two police officers were reported shot during a protest in Dallas over recent police killings of black men.

A live shot from Fox 4 TV station KDFW showed the two officers lying still on the street after shots were heard and protesters and media ran from the scene of what had been a peaceful protest.

Fox News Channel was carrying the feed live and cut away when the two officers were seen on the screen.

A uniformed police officer told the Fox 4 reporter that someone with a rifle was in the area.

One witness told KTVT he heard about 20 gunshots in rapid succession. Police returned fire with handguns, and the witness, who said he is familiar with weapons, said the shooter's gun sounded like an assault-style weapon.
