Twitter has permanently banned conservative blogger Milo Yiannopoulos for his role in harassing actress Leslie Jones, co-star of the recent released "Ghostbusters" movie, CNN reports.

Yiannopoulos, who is the tech editor of Breitbart and has more than 350,000 followers on Twitter, has been temporarily suspended from the platform numerous times in the past but had never before been told it was permanent.

The New York Times said the move by Twitter was an attempt to show it was combating the phenomenon after years of being criticized that anonymous people can send abusive comments to others on the service without penalty.

This apparently came to the fore when Jones complained about the wave of racist and sexist abuse she had been receiving on her Twitter account, which was apparently inspired by Yiannopoulos's harsh criticism of her and the movie.

Jones said that the abuse became so bad that in exasperation she gave up her Twitter account.

In response to her complaints, Twitter shut Yiannopoulos's account and issued a statement saying: "People should be able to express diverse opinions and beliefs on Twitter. But no one deserves to be subjected to targeted abuse online, and our rules prohibit inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others…

"We know many people believe we have not done enough to curb this type of behavior on Twitter. We agree. We are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to better allow us to identify and take faster action on abuse as it's happening and prevent repeat offenders."

Yiannopoulos, who is currently at the National Republican Convention in Cleveland, said on Breitbart that "with the cowardly suspension of my account, Twitter has confirmed itself as a safe space for Muslim terrorists and Black Lives Matter extremists, but a no-go zone for conservatives."

"Like all acts of the totalitarian regressive left, this will blow up in their faces, netting me more adoring fans," Yiannopoulos continued. "We're winning the culture war, and Twitter just shot themselves in the foot. This is the end for Twitter. Anyone who cares about free speech has been sent a clear message: you're not welcome on Twitter."
