Officials in President Donald Trump's administration toughened their stance Sunday and had a singular message for Russian President Vladimir Putin — drop your support of Syria, The Washington Post reported.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and national security adviser Gen. H.R. McMaster on Sunday did not mince words intended for Putin.

"What we're not going to allow is for Russia to have [Syrian President Bashar al-] Assad's back anymore," Haley told NBC's "Meet the Press." "We're going to call you out for the fact that you're covering up."

Tillerson, who travels to Russia later this week for his first visit as head of the State Department, said on ABC's "This Week" that last week's chemical attack came on Putin's watch.

"I hope Russia is thinking carefully about its continued alliance with Bashar al-Assad, because every time one of these horrific attacks occurs, it draws Russia closer into some level of responsibility," Tillerson told George Stephanopoulos.

Though Tillerson doesn't believe Russia was complicit in last week's chemical attack that killed nearly 100 people, Trump's top diplomat said Russia failed in its responsibility to govern the removal of chemical weapons from its ally.

"Clearly, they've been incompetent, and perhaps they've just simply been out-maneuvered by the Syrians," Tillerson said Sunday.

McMaster suggested Russia rethink its role in Syria.

"Russia should ask themselves, 'What are we doing here? Why are we supporting this murderous regime that is committing mass murder of its own population and using the most heinous weapons available?'" McMaster said Sunday in an interview with "Fox News Sunday."

Haley told CNN that this ends with a new regime in Syria.

Until Assad is out, "there's not any sort of option where a political solution is going to happen," Haley said.
