President-elect Donald Trump called for an immediate end of prisoner releases at the Guantanamo Bay military prison.

Trump's tweet comes as President Barack Obama plans to ship as many as 19 prisoners overseas before he leaves office, The Hill reports.

Despite Obama's vow to close down the prison, the move would leave it with about 40 inmates when the president's term ends.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International urged Obama to close the detention facility before his presidency ends.

"On behalf of Amnesty International's 1.2 million supporters in the United States, I write to make a final plea that you use all the powers of your office to close the detention camp at Guant√°namo Bay," Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA, wrote in a letter to Obama, the Hill reports.

"We are gravely concerned that if you fail to do so, President-elect Trump may attempt to bring dozens or even hundreds of people there, to be held in unlawful detention for decades and possibly subjected to torture and other forms of cruel treatment."

Trump has already said he will not close down the detention facility.
