President Donald Trump's advisers are going over an order that would designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, The New York Times reports.

The Muslim Brotherhood is a political and social organization with millions of followers. It is the oldest and one of the most influential Islamist group in the Middle East, according to the Times.

It renounced violence years ago. After the fall of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, the organization won elections in Egypt. It was forced out of power in 2013.

Other groups affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood have joined the political systems in Turkey and Tunisia, the Times reports.

The organization wants a society governed by Islamic law. And some of its former offshoots, particular Hamas, the Palestinian group with the goal of the destruction of Israel, have been linked to attacks.

Former President Barack Obama had backed away from calling the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group, but it is getting a new review from President Trump, according to the Times.

The Times reports that sources had expected the order to be signed by Trump on Monday, but it was put off for at least a week.

The Washington Post reports that 10 years ago, Steve Bannon, now the chief strategist for Trump, described the Muslim Brotherhood as "the foundation of modern terrorism" in a summary for a proposed film on radical Islam.
