Retired Gen. Mike Flynn repeatedly interrupted Donald Trump's intelligence briefing with pointed questions that prompted New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to tell him, "shut up," NBC News reports.

Sources told NBC that Christie, who is one of Trump's closest advisers, "verbally restrained Flynn," during the private powwow.

One of the sources said Christie told Flynn to "Shut up," while another source said he told the retired military man to "calm down."

And other sources said Christie "touched Flynn's arm in an effort get him to calm down" and let officials briefing Trump continue with their presentation.

Earlier this year, Flynn, who served as a U.S. Army lieutenant general and as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, was on Trump's shortlist of possible vice-presidential running mates. He ultimately lost out to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

Meanwhile, Trump's interpretation of the meeting has also been under fire.

U.S. officials are doubting the Republican presidential nominee's claim he read the "body language" of intelligence officials at the briefing and they were upset with President Barack Obama. But a U.S. official told NBC that intelligence officers don't give policy advice and remain close to the vest.
