President Donald Trump's administration is ending Let Girls Learn, an education initiative focused on girls, according to officials.

The initiative that former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle started in 2015 will be discontinued immediately, an internal document obtained by CNN said.

"Moving forward, we will not continue to use the 'Let Girls Learn' brand or maintain a standalone program," Sheila Crowley, the agency's acting director, wrote in an email to Peace Corps employees.

"'Let Girls Learn' provided a platform to showcase Peace Corps' strength in community development, shining a bright light on the work of our volunteers all over the world. We are so proud of what 'Let Girls Learn' accomplished and we have all of you to thank for this success," Crowley wrote.

The initiative was run at the Peace Corps and the United States Agency for International Development. A Peace Corps spokesman said in the CNN report that the agency's work for girls would continue.

"Girls' education and empowerment has been a hallmark of our work over the past 56 years and we look forward to continuing those efforts with our interagency partners. We remain dedicated to the passionate work of our volunteers and staff to empower and educate girls in their communities," a Peace Corps spokesman said.

"'Let Girls Learn' had several years of funding already baked. We were hopeful that, given that, it could continue. But obviously elections have consequences, and nobody knows that better than we," said Tina Tchen, an Obama chief of staff, told CNN.

Pledges for the program had hit more than $1 billion for programs in 50 countries, CNN reported.

Voice of America reported in April that Let Girls Learn was helping girls around the world who were not attending schools.

In March, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter, encouraged young girls to seek out careers in science, technology, engineer, and math.
