Sen. Tim Scott: Problems Don't Give Kaepernick Reason to 'Disrespect Our Flag'

The African-American community has a problem, but that "never gives you permission to disrespect our flag," Sen. Tim Scott said Thursday, while criticizing NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and others who take a knee rather than stand for the National Anthem.

"This country is the beacon of light for all of mankind and anyone that stands up or refuses to stand, I think you're making a drastic mistake and you're bringing the focus to you and not the underlying issue," the South Carolina Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program Thursday.

"Never should we ever find ourselves in a situation where we find the flag of the United States of America being antithetical to freedom," Scott said. "The flag is the symbol of hope and opportunity for all."

The American flag "flies for freedom," he also commented, "and the fact that some of us have to work to make sure that all of us experience our freedom means that we've made progress."

"Because this country is the beacon of life for all of mankind and anyone that stands up or refuses to stand, I think you're making a drastic mistake and you're bringing the focus to you and not to the underlying issue."

Scott and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., are the only two black senators.

Scott has said in the past that he's faced discrimination, even after he was elected to the Senate.

"So while I thank God I have not endured bodily harm, I have, however, felt the pressure applied by the scales of justice when they are slanted," he said this summer on the Senate floor, reports the Washington Examiner.

At the time, Scott said he was stopped last year by a U.S. Capitol security guard the year before outside his Senate office, even though he was wearing an identification pin.

In yet another instance, he said he was denied entry to an event, even though his white staff members were allowed to come in.
