Texas' conservative lawmakers aren't waiting for the Supreme Court after losing a major abortion case before the highest court last year, the state legislature is looking to unleash four dozen anti-abortion bills.

"We have made tremendous gains," Joe Pojman, head of the Texas Alliance for Life, told Politico. He added that he sees "huge progress" when looking at abortion trends.

"What makes Texas unique is that the clinic system was undercut so quickly," said Elizabeth Nash of the Guttmacher Institute, which researches reproductive rights. "Texas has taken what might have happened in a decade or more in another state and collapsed it into a year."

This year, Texas and seven other states introduced legislation to totally outlaw abortions, according to Guttmacher.

In 2013, the Texas legislature introduced a set of restrictions on abortion into a law known as HB2, which the Supreme Court later struck down as unconstitutional. Despite this setback, the number of abortion providers in the state has dropped from 41 centers in 17 counties in 2012 to 17 facilities in six counties.

"Obviously, this is a high-risk environment where the legislature is staying very busy providing restrictions to access to abortion care," Dr. Daniel Grossman, University of California, San Francisco professor and investigator for the Texas Policy Evaluation Project, told Politico.
