Taya Kyle: Retired Generals Like Allen, Flynn Should Speak on Politics

Taya Kyle, the widow of "American Sniper" Chris Kyle, said Monday she doesn't agree with Gen. Martin Dempsey, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that retired military leaders like Marine Gen. John Allen and Army Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn should stay out of political campaigns.

"When they're active duty, certainly they're not supposed to be," Kyle told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "But they're retired. They spent their careers fighting for all of our rights to have freedom of speech. So I think once they're out, they should be the first in line to exercise their right to free speech."

Dempsey over the weekend wrote a letter to the editors of The Washington Post and insisted that the military is "not a political prize."

"Politicians should take the advice of senior military leaders but keep them off the stage," wrote Dempsey. "The American people should not wonder where their military leaders draw the line between military advice and political preference.

"And our nation's soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines should not wonder about the political leanings and motivations of their leaders."

Allen and Flynn both were introduced at the Democratic and Republican conventions, respectively, as generals, not as private citizens, Dempsey said.

"As generals, they have an obligation to uphold our apolitical traditions," said Dempsey. "They have just made the task of their successors — who continue to serve in uniform and are accountable for."

There have been many presidents who served in the military, Kyle said Monday, and "we  always considered that experience to be very valuable and we listen to them more."

She does think that such people should look at their own consciences and decide if they're representing the facts in a truthful manner.

"I think you bear some responsibility to be honest, have integrity," she said. "There are other generals who are sitting in on meetings, [and] you don't want the president or somebody else to wonder if they should invite them in on the meeting if they're active duty to see if they'll criticize them later."
