Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking in his new BBC documentary issues a stern warning to humans to leave Earth within 100 years to ensure survival, the Telegraph reports.

In "Expedition New Earth," set to be released this summer as part of the BBC's Tomorrow's World science season, Hawking claims our time on Earth is running out and humans need to leave the planet to survive climate change, asteroid strikes, overpopulation and other epidemics.

The two-part series will consist of Hawking traveling the world with former student Christophe Galfard and engineering professor Danielle George in search of answers on how humans can live in outer space.

Hawking spelled out his theory during a talk at the Oxford Union debating society last November.

"We must also continue to go into space for the future of humanity," he said in November. "I don't think we will survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet."

He also discussed it last January in an interview with the BBC.

"Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race. However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period."
