Senate Republicans Vow to Halt All Legislation if Reid Goes 'Nuclear'

Senate Republicans vowed on Thursday that no other legislation would pass the upper chamber until after next year’s elections if Democrats used the so-called “nuclear option” to change Senate rules on filibusters.

“If Sen. Reid changes the character of the Senate, then the Senate ceases to function,” Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said regarding Majority Leader Harry Reid’s threat to exercise the nuclear option. “We’ll take our case to the people, we’ll argue for a new majority — and then Republicans will be in a position to do whatever Republicans with 51 votes want to do.”

Reid, the Nevada Democrat, is considering whether to change the Senate’s rules to a simple majority vote to stop filibusters against executive and judicial branch nominees, The Hill reports.

Twenty-one Senate Democrats face re-election next year — and Republicans hope to regain control by campaigning against the Democrats’ “tyranny of the majority,” The Hill reports.

Alexander, a former member of the GOP leadership who is close to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, told The Hill that Republicans would use the nuclear option to push through legislative changes if they regain Senate control.

They are vowing to use their majority control to ram through a repeal of Obamacare, a repeal of the Wall Street Reform Act and other GOP priorities, The Hill reports.
