New York AG Schneiderman: Trump University Case Not Politically Motivated

New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Sunday his office's prosecution of Trump University is not political, pointing out it was begun in 2013, long before anyone knew Trump would be running for president.

Businessman Donald Trump, who currently is the Republican front-runner for president is set to testify in the fraud case this summer. Several students who shelled out up to $35,000 for seminars and mentoring with real estate experts say they didn't get what they were promised.

Schneiderman, appearing Sunday on "The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York, told host John Catsimatidis that the business was never registered with the state education department and the teachers were not experts and not chosen by Trump himself, as he promises in a promotional video.

"There were thousands of folks who thought they were going to learn from real estate experts who were handpicked by Trump, and they would learn his personal secrets," Schneiderman said.

"The president of the university has already testified that Trump never met the teachers, they weren't experts, and they weren't his secrets," he said. "In fact, he didn’t even know what was in the curriculum."

Trump has said the case is politically motivated, saying that Schneiderman asked his daughter, Ivanka her husband, Jared Kushner, for campaign contributions, while hinting the probe against Trump University might be called off.

"We never had any idea in 2013 the guy was going to run for president," Schneiderman said. "This is not a political case. This is just a case where a lot of New Yorkers were ripped off and filed a fraud case."
