The mayor of San Francisco has banned city workers from traveling to North Carolina in the wake of the state's new law overturning some protections for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

In a statement announcing the directive Friday, Mayor Edwin Lee said he believes "we should be adding more protections to prevent discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in the United States, not taking them away."

The travel ban is the latest in a business backlash against the so-called bathroom bill that requires transgender people use public restrooms that match the gender they were born with, and prevents municipalities from passing their own anti-discrimination rules.
