Sadiq Khan, elected as London's first Muslim mayor on Friday, tells Time magazine he won't be able to visit the United States if Donald Trump becomes president.

Trump in December proposed a temporary moratorium on Muslim immigration in December to keep out potential terrorists. He is now the presumptive GOP nominee.

Khan said he would like to visit American mayors to see what he can learn from them, but added, "Clearly [I'll visit] before January in case Donald Trump wins."

Khan praised New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for their work on housing and infrastructure.

"If Donald Trump becomes the president I'll be stopped from going there by virtue of my faith, which means I can't engage with American mayors and swap ideas," he said.

Khan was opposed by conservatives in London, who said he was radical, but Khan said, "those sort of tactics" didn't work in London.

"I'm confident that Donald Trump's approach to politics won't win in America."

Trump has stood by his proposal to temporarily ban Muslim immigration, but said it would not apply to dignitaries or longtime business travelers with known backgrounds.
