While adeptly sidestepping the issue of what Donald Trump said about Vladimir Putin, Paul Ryan on Thursday issued his own rebuke of the Russian president.

"Vladimir Putin is an aggressor that does not share our interests," Ryan said, reports ABC News. "Vladimir Putin is violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries."

It was a markedly different tone than the one Trump gave Wednesday night during the televised Presidential forum when he praised Putin as a strong leader.

"Far more than our president has been a leader," Trump said.

That comment stirred up the reaction machine among Democrats and Republicans alike, but Ryan wouldn't take the bait.

"I'm not going to sit up here and do the tit-for-tat on what Donald had said last or the night before and Hillary versus Donald," Ryan said. "That is not my job, and I'm not going to be the election year pundit commenting on all these little things. I’ll leave it at that."

But Ryan made it clear that Putin is no one to be praised.

"[It] certainly appears that he is conducting . . . state-sponsored cyberattacks on what appears to be our political system. That is an adversarial stance and he is acting like an adversary," Ryan said.
