Forget the talk about peeking in on emails. Russia is taking its spying ability to a level quite literally out of this world. The Russian military has planned deployment of space satellites that can rival the imagery resolution of those used by the U.S., The Daily Beast's David Axe reported Monday.

"This is a significant upgrade for the Russian capabilities," expert Brian Weeden of Secure World Foundation in Colorado told Axe.

Three Hrazdan satellites will be deployed in 2019, 2022 and 2024, and will help improve imagery resolution down to seven centimeters per pixel, according to the report. The satellites are commonly used by the military to spy, coordinate deployments and spot potential bombing and missile targets, it continued.

But as much as this represents improvement for the Russian satellite and military capability, it merely narrows the gap on the U.S.'s large world-wide lead in satellite surveillance technology.

"The U.S. appears to be investing a lot more in that than the Russians or anyone else," Weeden told Axe.

"From what I can tell, the U.S. still has a pretty sizable advantage at least qualitatively, if not quantitatively."
