Russia Building Oversized Aircraft Carrier After 30-Year Lull

By    |   Wednesday, 04 Mar 2015 07:02 PM

Russia is reportedly building a new aircraft carrier — and it'll outsize the ones in America’s current Navy fleet.

The Russian Itar-Tass News Agency reports Russia's top naval commander announced the effort Monday, according to The National Interest.

"The period of stagnation in the development of our potential has long since passed," Viktor Chirkov, a Russian commander, told Itar-Tass.

Russia currently has one operational aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, which was launched in 1985.

But Russia media outlets last month started reporting the government-owned Krylov State Research Center was in the rudimentary stages of developing a new carrier-class for the Russian navy, The National Interest reports.

When completed, the new Russian aircraft carrier would reportedly be able to hold roughly 100 aircraft on board — making it 10 percent larger than America's current Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, which can store roughly 90 aircraft carrier.
