Jeb's Tongue Slips: 'I'm Running for President in 2016'

By    |   Wednesday, 13 May 2015 06:44 PM

Jeb Bush did not definitively say he is running for president during an interview on Wednesday, but an apparent slip of the tongue may have hinted at his plans to join the race.

When asked whether he would do anything differently from his brother George W. Bush, who served as president from 2001 to 2009, the former Florida governor uttered a headline-making statement before adding an "if."

"I'm running for president in 2016, and the focus is going to be about how we — if I run — how do you create high sustained economic growth where more people have a chance at earned success," the Republican Bush said. "I will apply my record and the ideas that are relevant to all of this."

Bush made the remarks during an interview with KRNV in Reno, Nevada.

Earlier in the interview, Bush was asked whether he was an official candidate yet.

"No, no, I'm not an official candidate. I've been traveling the country for the last three months and making up my mind, trying to determine the support I may have should I go forward," Bush said.

When asked when he might announce his candidacy, Bush said, "I'll make up my mind soon, for sure."

Bush has long been expected to join the race for president, and he is amassing a campaign war chest that could take in as much as $100 million in the first quarter of this year.

Bush either leads or is close to the lead in most polls.

Six Republicans are officially in the race thus far: Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas), Rand Paul (Kentucky), and Marco Rubio (Florida); former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee; retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson; and former business executive Carly Fiorina.
