Rick Santorum Making Moves to 2016 Bid

By    |   Tuesday, 06 Jan 2015 07:51 PM

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum may be inching closer to an earlier-than-expected decision about a 2016 White House run, meeting Tuesday with top state Republicans and supporters.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer,  the gathering was put together by the President of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association, Frederick Anton, who told invitees Santorum's "message of fighting for working Americans, manufacturing, and our conservative values resonated — and still does — with voters all over the country."

Santorum also has invited about two dozen former advisers for a "private briefing" on his plans in Washington next Tuesday at American Continental Group, a lobbying and public affairs firm, the Inquirer reports, citing an email invitation circulated by Matt Beynon, a spokesman for Santorum’s 2012 presidential campaign.

"As you probably know, RJS is seriously considering a run for the White House in 2016," Beynon wrote in the email, CNN reports.

"With the midterms and the new year behind us, he is beginning the final stages of preparation and consideration of another campaign."

Santorum won 4 million votes,  carried primaries or caucuses in 11 states during his last campaign and was a favorite of grassroots conservatives who mistrusted former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the Inquirer notes. He dropped out, however, just before the Pennsylvania primary.

Weeks ago, Santorum said he wouldn't make a decision about a campaign until "well into" 2015, but may be pushing up that deadline in light of moves toward a campaign by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, The Hill reports.
