Rick Perry's Last Day as Governor

By    |   Monday, 19 Jan 2015 10:50 PM

As Texas Gov. Rick Perry prepares to hand over the mantle of state leadership to Greg Abbott on Tuesday, he told The New York Times he isn't ready yet to say whether he'll make another run at the presidency in 2016.

"I think most people think we’re probably going to run, but we’ll announce our intentions in May or June," Perry told the Times. "I haven’t tried to be coy at all. I’ve been very forthright with my intentions to do the preparatory work that’s required, and we’ve done that."

Though he might face other Republicans with Texas ties — Sen. Ted Cruz and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — Perry said they don't have his 14 years experience running a state like Texas.

But, he added, "I don’t really pay a lot of attention to who’s in, who’s out, the horse race thing. I did this once, and I know it’s a long process."

Perry said he stands by a controversial law he signed in 2001 allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition. Perry said he would rather have them contributing to society rather than being "takers."

Perry's 2012 run is best remembered by his inability during a debate to remember the third of three agencies he said he would eliminate if elected. (They were the Commerce and Education departments and — the one he forgot — the Environmental Protection Agency.)

Perry has since blamed his campaign word flubs on medication he was taking after back surgery, and said it was a mistake to have tried to seek the nation's highest office before he was completely healed.
