The Obama administration has been underhanded in its attempt to use nearly $9 million of taxpayer money to purchase nuclear material from Iran, The Washington Free Beacon reported Tuesday.

The administration has been misleading Congress about the dealings with the terrorist state, and lawmakers now seek an injunction to prevent future payments.

"Misleading members of Congress, and the American people, on critical issues of national security is tragically becoming commonplace for this administration," House Intelligence Committee member Rep. Mike Pompeo told the Free Beacon.

The administration had been responding to recent inquiries by saying the deal had not yet been finalized, but now says the deal was finalized in April.

"The administration learned its lesson a few months ago, when their plans to provide Iran with access to the U.S. dollar were confirmed too early, and then Congress blocked them," a congressional adviser said. "So this time administration officials simply denied rumored and reported details of the sale until everything was too late, so that lawmakers were never able to block this effort."

What is the administration getting for its $8.6 million? Thirty tons of heavy water, a nuclear byproduct, according to the Free Beacon.

Under the controversial nuclear deal reached in 2015, Iran is limited in the amount of such material it can have, so the U.S. pays the country $8.6 million to relieve them of it. By doing that, the U.S. essentially enables Iran to get around the restrictions outlined in the deal.

That may be illegal, says Pompeo.

"The Obama administration's deal … to purchase heavy water demonstrates a disturbing, potentially illegal, willingness of the administration to subsidize Iran's nuclear program," Pompeo, R-Kansas, said. "This purchase allows the Iranians to offload previously unsellable product."
