Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus Wednesday slammed President Barack Obama's assurances on guarding the American people against the Islamic State, saying that "radical Islamic terrorism cannot be defeated without the right leaders."

"From day one, President Obama and Hillary Clinton underestimated the threat of ISIS — and now we're learning that not only are punches being pulled in this fight, the intelligence appears to have been doctored for some time," Priebus said.

President Obama said at the White House on Wednesday that no "specific and credible" intelligence currently existed of any terrorist plot on the United States, as he sought to reassure Americans for the Thanksgiving holiday.

"While the threat of terrorism is a troubling reality of our age, we are both equipped to prevent attacks and we are resilient in the face of those who would try to do us harm," Obama said. "And that's something we can all be thankful for."

Obama spoke after a briefing with his national security team, including FBI Director James Comey, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Homeland Security Director Jeh Johnson and his national security adviser, Susan Rice.

"We are taking every possible step to keep our homeland safe," Obama said.

But the president's words failed to reassure Priebus.

"We've seen from President Obama calling ISIS contained to Hillary Clinton saying this isn't an American fight, the Democrat Party is simply not up to the task," the RNC chairman said. "We need new leadership and we need it now."

In addition, House Speaker Paul Ryan said that President Obama now must present a plan for destroying ISIS after he signed the $607 billion National Defense Authorization Act the chamber passed earlier this month.

"President Obama is now required to come up with a real, comprehensive plan to defeat ISIS," the Wisconsin Republican said. "That is the ultimate solution to this crisis."
