Ray Kelly: Officers Did Anti-Terror Work in 11 Cities After 9/11

Fox Business News' "Mornings with Maria"

Former New York City Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly has revealed details of how the city reacted in the months following the September 11 terror attacks.

During an interview on "Mornings with Maria," Kelly told host Maria Bartiromo the city beefed up its security defenses after the World Trade Center was hit for the second time in eight years.

"We knew we had to buttress our defenses. We had to supplement what the FBI was doing," Kelly said on Fox Business News. "So, we brought in experts from the federal government, from other agencies. We brought in students from some of the top Ivy League schools to work as analysts for us.

"We ultimately assigned police officers overseas in 11 cities to act as listening posts and tripwires for the city. We devoted over 1,000 police officers every day to counterterrorism efforts."

Kelly released his memoir last year but recently published an updated copy with a new chapter on terror attacks that have taken place since the original printing and also the threats the world continues to face.

"Well, it is certainly not getting better," Kelly said of the security situation in America. "What we've seen is the threat sort of broaden, not necessarily deepen but broaden. San Bernardino was a particular concern because San Bernardino is a nice city but it wasn't on anybody's terrorist target list that we knew of. Two hundred thousand people, working-class community.

"It shows us that the whole United States is in play, if you will. We have to do more in suburban areas and even rural areas to protect resources."
