The Republican Party should rebrand itself along the lines of what Pope Francis is doing for the Catholic Church, conservative political activist Ralph Reed says.

"What Francis is doing is rebalancing the Catholic church's message to stress the pastoral mission of good works and service to people before getting to ideology," the former Christian Coalition executive director said, according to National Journal.

"What he's not doing is jettisoning the Catholic doctrine. What about that is not a model for the Republican Party?" he said, adding, "It starts with meeting people where they are. If somebody is hungry, feed them. If somebody is naked, clothe them."

Reed used the example of former President George W. Bush who was able to increase evangelical turnout while expanding support for the Republican Party by using the "compassionate conservative" message.

"I would argue that in a sense the party has already learned the lessons we see on display with Pope Francis," Reed said. "We just need to get back to it."

The comments come just a few days after former GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin said she was "taken aback" by some of the comments she's heard Pope Francis has said on the basis that they "sound kind of liberal"
