Americans Support Quarantine of Healthcare Workers

Voters overwhelming support placing healthcare workers who have been exposed to patients with Ebola in quarantine, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll.

The survey of likely voters finds that 70 percent believe it is good policy to quarantine for as long as 21 days, all healthcare workers if they have had contact with Ebola patients in West Africa. Voters also said states should be allowed to enforce tighter restrictions on health workers if they view the federal government's preventive measures are not sufficient.

The remaining 30 percent of voters either oppose quarantining patients (19 percent) or were not sure (11 percent) whether Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines were adequate. The survey was conducted on Oct. 27-28.

A CBS News poll found even more support among Americans for quarantining individuals who have traveled to West Africa.

According to the poll, 80 percent feel U.S. citizens and legal residents should be watched until they are given medical clearance. Just 17 percent said that as long as an individual is not symptomatic, they should be allowed into the country.

There is even greater support for stringent restrictions on foreign visitors.

As many as 27 percent do not favor allowing foreigners to enter the U.S. "at all until the Ebola epidemic in West Africa is over."

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama said such quarantines were not necessary and inferred lawmakers and governors who support quarantines are reacting out of fear.

"And when we see a problem and we see a challenge, then we fix it. We don't just react based on our fears. We react based on facts and judgment and making smart decisions.
That's how we have built this country and sustained this country and protected this country," Obama said.
