Rep. Ed Royce: Putin Irresponsible to Embrace Kim Jong Un

By    |   Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 07:43 PM

Russia's invitation to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to celebrate World War II Victory Day in May in Moscow is troubling, especially since China is trying to rein him in, Rep. Ed Royce told CNN on Thursday.

China has been trying to get Kim to pull back on the country's efforts to expand its nuclear program, Royce told CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

"They put pressure on North Korea, and yet here the Russians come in with a lifeline to Kim Jong Un at a time when even the Chinese are trying to get more responsible behavior out of Kim Jong Un," the Republican from California said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's irresponsibility of embracing Kim makes Putin look just as arbitrary as Kim, who has made such unpredictable moves as killing his own uncle for being too close to the Chinese, he said.

"I think all of this along with … these very aggressive moves against our NATO allies … just sends the message that he's not particularly in a mood to recognize that the sanctions that are on him that are slowly imploding the economy in Russia need to be addressed with a change of behavior," Royce said.
