Poll: Obama Far More Popular in Cuba Than in US

The results of a new poll show that President Barack Obama is far more popular in Cuba than he is in the United States.

The Bendixen & Amandi Poll for Univision Noticias-Fusion finds that 46 percent of Cubans hold "somewhat of a positive opinion" of Obama, while another 34 percent have a "very positive opinion" of him.

Combined, that amounts to an 80 percent approval rating — much higher than Obama's approval number in the U.S., which is currently at 47 percent. The Fusion poll found that Cuban President Raul Castro's approval rating is at 47 percent as well.

Further, 89 percent of Cubans would like to see Obama visit the island, which lies just 90 miles from Florida.

The last U.S. president to visit Cuba while in office was Calvin Coolidge in 1928.

Other highlights from the poll:
  • 53 percent think the U.S. is a friend of Cuba;
  • Former Cuban President Fidel Castro has a 44 percent approval rating;
  • 55 percent would like to live in a country other than Communist-led Cuba, and 52 percent would like to live in the U.S.
Relations between the United States and Cuba are improving in the wake of an agreement to sever the U.S. embargo on the island, opening trade relations between the two countries.

Not everyone is happy about the improved relations, including Florida Sen. (and Cuban-American) Marco Rubio, who is preparing for a White House run.

The results of a poll released Wednesday, however, show that 59 percent of Americans agree with the renewed diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Cuba.
