More than two-thirds of likely U.S voters (69 percent) oppose the government investigating and prosecuting individuals and corporations who question the truth of global warming, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll released on Tuesday.

Only 15 percent favor such probes, while 16 percent are undecided.

Attorneys general in numerous states are attempting to prosecute those who they say are intentionally misleading the public about global warming in order to protect business interests, Eco Watch reports.

Critics say this is a violation of freedom of speech and has prompted a congressional investigation.

Other findings of the survey include:

  • Even among Democratic voters, only 21 percent are in favor of the government investigating and prosecuting global warming critics.
  • Among both Republicans and independents, 11 percent favor the probes.
  • 61 percent of voters say the scientific debate over global warming is not over, 25 percent believe it is and 15 percent are not sure.
  • While Democrats (28 percent) and Republicans (26 percent) believe the debate is over at a similar rate, only 19 percent of the unaffiliated believe so.
  • Those who think the scientific debate on global warming is over and those who don't are equally opposed to the government investigating those who challenge the claims.
  • Only 8 percent of voters say the environment is the most important issue in the presidential elections.
  • Only 20 percent of Americans think they have true freedom of speech, while 73 percent say they have to be careful not to say something politically incorrect in order to avoid getting into trouble.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on August 3-4. The margin of sampling error is =/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
