Poll: US Popular Support for Palestinian Statehood at 20-Year Low

By    |   Tuesday, 31 Mar 2015 07:05 PM

American support for an independent Palestinian state has dropped to its lowest level in decades, according to a new Washington Post/ABC/Gallup poll.

The poll shows that the idea of establishing a Palestinian state next to Israel "is more divisive than at any point in the past 20 years, as a long period of generally bipartisan support for the concept has passed," the Post reported.

A plurality of respondents still support the idea of Palestinian statehood, with 39 percent in favor of the idea and 36 percent opposed. The 39 percent figure marks the lowest level of U.S. popular support for Palestinian statehood since 1998.

Previous polling by Gallup showed that a majority of Americans backed statehood, reaching a high of 58 percent in June 2003, when just 22 percent were opposed. The 2003 poll was at a time when President George W. Bush was unveiling a "roadmap" for Israeli-Palestinian peace which included the creation of an independent Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with its Israeli neighbor.

By a margin of 50 percent to 38 percent, Americans disapprove of President Barack Obama's handling of relations with Israel. But at the same time, they disapprove of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of relations with the United States by a 44-37 percent margin.

Political ideology plays a powerful role in defining Americans' attitudes regarding a Palestinian state. Support ranges from 58 percent among liberals to 41 percent of moderates.

It then drops to 30 percent of Americans who call themselves "somewhat" conservative and just 18 percent of those who say they are "very conservative."

Back in 2003, when support for statehood was at its peak, these huge ideological divisions did not exist, ABC News reported.

The poll was conducted between March 26 and March 29 among a random national sample of 1,003 adults and has a 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
